Bamfield Marine Sciences Center is searching for kitchen crew to fill the following positions for the upcoming season. The following positions are ten month terms that could be “yearly recurrent” based on the person and the organizational fit.
• Kitchen Helper
Under supervision, engage in routine duties involved in preparing and serving food, and in cleaning food service equipment. Desirable qualifications are: Knowledge of kitchen and dining room work, good personal hygiene, sound knife skills and standard operation of kitchen appliances and equipment. Applicants must be able to learn routines involved in preparing and serving food, possess the ability to follow instructions both oral and written and be in good physical health. Candidates must possess a Food-safe level 1 (or be willing to take course). Candidates must be willing to work shifts (weekends, early morning or nights.) Pay rates for these positions range from $14.00 to $15.00 per hour plus benefits based on experience and qualifications.
• Cooks
Two Strong cooks required for our fall and winter season. As a member of our production team these cooks will be involved in providing daily service to our students, researchers and guests as well as some special event production. A Red Seal, is always preferred, food safe is required with some experience in catering production. A sound background in all aspects of kitchen operation is a strong asset. These positions require a strong personality, the ability to take direction clearly and a desire to be a positive, reliable member of our crew.
The positions will be responsible for breakfast, lunch and dinner production in our unionized work environment. Pay rates for these positions range from $16.00 to $19.00 per hour plus benefits based on experience and qualifications.

The Bamfield Marine Sciences Center is a satellite campus of the University of Victoria located in beautiful Bamfield, British Columbia. Our kitchen provides healthy innovative meals for our student, research and public education clientele as we strive to provide a “from scratch” culinary experience.
The kitchen at Bamfield Marine science Center is well equipped, clean and fully functional with a small conference center seating 150 people marketed for seminars, conferences and weddings.
The Bamfield Marine Science Center operates from February 1st to December 15th. We offer a unique working environment in a unique setting. Staff accommodations are available for up to six months as transitional housing.

Requirements:
Cooks and kitchen helpers must possess Food-safe Level 1 and all kitchen staff is required to work shifts (weekends, early mornings and or evenings).
All kitchen positions are unionized (Cupe 401) and members are entitled to benefits as defined in the Collective Agreement. Positions are casual to start and may move to recurrent term upon completion of the contractual probation period.
