Five year Sponsorship
First: The five sponsors or guarantors must be persons of Canadian nationality or have the status of permanent residents in Canada. And to be at least 18 years of age.
Second: That the five sponsors have sufficient financial capacity to provide the necessary material support for the refugee and his family, if any, for a full year after entering Canadian territory.
Third: Provide sufficient evidence and evidence about the ability of the sponsor to provide social and moral support to the refugee and his family, if any, during the first year of his stay in Canada.
Fourth: That the refugee reside in the area in which the five sponsors reside, i.e., if they live in the Ottawa region, he must reside in the same region as theirs, and or the Montreal region or any region in Canada in which the sponsors reside, the refugee must live with them.
Fifth: That the refugee possesses a protection paper from the United Nations (registered with the United Nations as a refugee) and lives outside his country of origin.
Refugee status under the five-year guarantee:
1- Once a refugee enters Canada, he can apply for permanent residency, to receive it usually after one to two months.
2- The refugee does not receive any salary or material assistance from the Canadian government during the first year. “The sponsors are the ones who take care of him under the five-year guarantee,” except for children under the age of 18, who are allocated a salary of approximately 300 Canadian dollars per month.
3- After the refugee obtains permanent residency status, he is entitled to travel and move on Canadian soil.
4- The refugee must spend a period of no less than 3 years or 1095 days out of 4 years (previously 5 years) in order to obtain Canadian citizenship and passport.
