Belgium opens registration for illegal immigrants to apply for residence

The Belgian government has reopened the door to settle the situation of the illegal immigrants and give them residence papers in Belgium and a working permit officially.

 Starting this month, if the work permit and the residence permit are issued respectively by the office of the regions and the Foreign office, the immigrant will receive one document stating that he is authorized to remain in belgium for official residence and employment.

Specialized offices will be in the process of giving a residence application : 


  • The office of foreigners and the office of the regions deal with requests jointly with each authority responsible for

matters within their competence.


  • The office of foreigners handles applications for residence permits and requests are processed by the office of the territories work permit.

Duration of application :


The office of regions will receive the request and verify that the file has been completed.
If the file is not complete, the advanced person will be given 15 minutes to complete it, if the party does not to complete their file during this period, the request will be rejected.
If the file is completed within 15 days, the application will be accepted.

The date on which the territory declares acceptance of the application is the starting point for a double deadline. A period of 15 days in which the person must send a copy of the file to the foreigners office and the second period of 4 months in any region if it has not made its decision in the first period, then the office of foreigners shall make a decision on the application, office of foreigners if there are problems related to the request.


This procedure is valid for:


  •  Residing in belgian territory illegally provided that their stay exceeds one year.



  •  The woman or couple whose child has been raised in Belgian territory.



  •  Persons who previously applied for residence in belgium and were rejected their request.



  •   Humanitarian asylum seekers whose applications have been rejected before.



  •  Holders of humanitarian cases suffering from disability or chronic diseases.



  •  Persons who have previously applied for political asylum and have been rejected.



  •  Couples with children under 18 years of age will be settled.



  •  Persons obtaining employment contracts from the belgian labor office.
