Biometrics are no available  or required for Canada new immigration applicants. Whereas, Canada waives biometrics requirements for all permanent residence applicants who have apply biometrics within the past ten years.What are biometrics?

Canada has already exempted other foreign nationals from providing biometrics due to its admission that disruptions caused by the COVID-19 virus may prevent them from doing so.

Biometrics are usually required for foreign citizens seeking a Canadian visit visa, study  and work permit [except for US citizens] refugee status, asylum, permanent residence, visitor record, or extension of their work or study permit.

These individuals are required to provide their fingerprints and photos with a fee.

Canada uses biometrics to confirm the identity of immigrants when they enter the country.

Eligible applicants with the effective date

According to The Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canad ,IRCC, this policy took effect on September 10, 2020 and took effect on September 22, 2020. It will remain in effect indefinitely.

Eligible applicants who are exempt from biometrics collection requirements regardless of whether they are currently in Canada or abroad are those who have both of the following:

- A new or pending application for permanent residence
- Provide their biometric data in advance within the 10-year period prior to the day on which they submitted their current permanent residence application

Canada no requires permanent resident applicants to apply their biometric information as long as they have provided their biometrics in another application within the past ten years.

The Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada has previously taken special measures due to the Covid virus pandemic such as allowing delays in apply biometric applications if applicants are unable to apply them.

It is not known when many biometrics collection service points in Canada and abroad will continue operations as normal.

The closure of Service Points and Visa Application Centers ,VACs, has affected thousands of permanent residency applicants.

Many of these applicants had previously provided their biometrics in a previous application.

In addition, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada said in a statement that Canada has an increasing number of permanent residence applications that cannot be processed due to biometric requirements.

As such, The Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada, aims to mitigate further disruptions to these individuals by waiving biometrics requirements in certain situations.
