How You Know Designated Learning Institutions (study in Canada)

Study Permits

In order to apply for a Canadian study permit, you have to first obtain a letter of acceptance to a study program at a Designated Learning Institution (DLI).

A DLI is a school authorized by a province or a territory to offer education to international students. If you want to come to Canada as an international student, before you apply to a program of study first ensure that the school is on the list of Designated Learning Institutions (DLIs). Please note that all primary and secondary schools in Canada are DLIs.

Designated Learning Institution Number

Any post-secondary school authorized to host international students will have a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) number.
Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), uses the DLI number to ensure that study permits are only issued to international students attending designated schools before applying to a school. consult the list below to find the DLI number of your institution.

Note:  schools with multiple locations, campuses, or smaller colleges, may have a different DLI number for the separate locations.

What Is Non DLI Schools ?

If a school is not designated by its provincial or territorial authority as a DLI, then it is not eligible to host international students.
If a study permit application is submitted for a non-DLI school, then this study permit will be refused.
If a DLI loses its designation after a study permit has been issued, the student may continue studying at the institution until the expiration of their study permit, or they may transfer to an alternative DLI.

Primary and Secondary Schools Permission

In Canada, all primary and secondary schools are DLIs in most provinces, these schools offer education from Grade One to Grade Twelve. When a student graduates from secondary school they receive their high school diploma. If a parent or legal guardian comes to Canada with a permit authorizing either work or study, their minor children will be automatically eligible to attend primary and secondary school without needing to apply for a separate study permit.
