Requirements
If you want to marry a Bulgarian citizen, you must meet these requirements:
- You must be single. In Bulgaria, polygamy or polygamy is prohibited.
- You must not have a mental illness that led to the state taking away any of your legal rights.
- You must be at least 18 years old. (In some exceptional cases, 16-year-olds can obtain permission from the Regional Court for marriage).
- You must marry someone of the opposite sex. Gay marriage is not recognized legally in Bulgaria.
- You must show explicit consent to marriage. No one can force you to marry in Bulgaria. It must be your choice and your consent.
- You can marry in Bulgaria even if you do not have refugee status or protection status in Bulgaria.
- If you apply for asylum in Bulgaria and refuse your application, you will not be allowed to marry in Bulgaria.
The documents that you need
- Identification documents
Such as a Bulgarian identity card or a valid national passport. Note that the refugee registration card is not an identity document, but you may be asked to submit it with your national passport. These documents must be original, that is, not copies.

- There is no objection to your marriage
You can get this document from the office where you intend to install marriage. Do this before your wedding day.
Acknowledge that you are aware of the diseases of your partner (if he is suffering from any diseases).

- Medical certificate
You can obtain this certificate by conducting a medical examination for those who wish to marry and which the couple must do before marriage. You can do this test at any clinic in Bulgaria.
A final divorce decision, if you or your partner have already married; or a death certificate for the deceased spouse if one of you is widowed.
- Check your social status
You can obtain this document from your mother country's embassy. The date of issue of the document must be within the last 6 months. It should also be translated into Bulgarian (sworn translation) and certified. If you have a refugee status or status status in Bulgaria, you can state your status with a certified statement.

A certificate attesting that the national law of your country of origin recognizes this marriage
The authorities may also ask you to report that there are no obstacles to your marriage under the national law of your country. You can obtain this document from your country's embassy in Bulgaria. This certificate must be translated into Bulgarian (translated) and certified. If there are obstacles to your marriage under the national law of your country, you will not be able to legally marry.

The procedures
After you have met all these requirements and have obtained all necessary documentation, you should visit the Civil Status Officer and schedule a public ceremony. You can find these officials in each municipality. You have the freedom to choose the municipality you want to marry; however, if you are an asylum seeker, you should not leave the written area on your registration card. Otherwise you will be detained.

Bring your identity documents (and your registration card) with you where the civil status officer will check your name, age, nationality, and the validity of the documents you provide.
I bring with you two witnesses. They may be Bulgarians or foreign nationals.
If there are no obstacles, you can get married. By signing the document you enter into a civil marriage. The document will also be signed by your husband, witnesses and civil status officer.

Residence permit
Marriage to a Bulgarian citizen will not guarantee you a residence permit in Bulgaria. Through fake marriage, you risk extorting money from your "fake husband" or other people involved.
To obtain a residence permit based on marriage, you first need to obtain a long-term residence visa from category D - regardless of whether your spouse is Bulgarian or foreign. Once you have obtained a long-stay visa in category (d), you are then allowed to apply for a residence permit on the basis of marriage.

Here's what you should do:
You must apply for a long-term visa from category (d)
Typically, foreigners must apply for this visa at the Bulgarian Embassy in their home country. But you can do it in Bulgaria if leaving Bulgaria will pose a real danger to your life or health, or if your stay in Bulgaria is in the interest of your family and children if you have children.
To apply without leaving Bulgaria, apply for a long-term D visa to the Bulgarian Foreign Ministry in Sofia.

Apply for prior permission from the Bulgarian immigration authorities
If you hold a long-term D visa and you are a family member of a Bulgarian citizen, you can obtain a stay permit for up to one year renewable. The law defines family members as couples who live together in one house. If you do not intend to live with your wife in Bulgaria, you are not eligible for a residence permit.
Security check
The police, in cooperation with the National Security Agency, verify that you are not a threat to national security and that your marriage is legitimate and not just a salary to obtain a residence permit.

The interview
You and your partner will interview the authorities before making a decision about your residence permit. If your application is rejected, you can appeal to the court within 14 days of receiving the rejection notice.
