The Canadian government has launched a new program to attract skilled migrants to work in rural and northern communities in Canada, where the gaps in employment are due to massive youth migration and population aging.

Immigrants will be chosen based on matching their skills to the local needs of their communities and can come from any number of professions from truck drivers to teachers and laboratory technicians, indicating that 3,000 people and their families can participate in the program, Immigration Minister Hussein Ahmed told reporters on Monday.

Hussein pointed out that 78 per cent of the newcomers to Canada settled in major cities such as Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver, indicating that the number of workers in rural areas in Canada decreased by 23 per cent between 2001 and 2016 due to population aging.

He explained that rural areas in the country contribute about 30 per cent of Canada's GDP.

The Canadian government will work directly with communities and groups that help newcomers in employment, language training and other social assistance, he said, stressing that infrastructure will help them successfully move to a new life in Canada and stay in the communities they reach.
